Textile Workshops at Cockington Court Craft Centre, Torquay

On second Saturdays, beginning 10th March, I'll be offering various sewing machine workshops, to run from 10.00-4.00 at a cost of £30.

On the third Saturday of each month, there will be half day workshops (10.00-1.00 and/or 1.15-4.15) that will not involve a sewing machine: peg loom weaving, weaving without any loom, knitting, crochet, hand embroidery, canvas work, spool knitting. Some of these will be very suitable for accompanied children of about 8 upwards, and the cost will be £15 (£5 per child).

Every participant at my workshops will get a 10% discount voucher for use in our shop within 7 days. Please pass the word!

Beginners/Improvers Machine Sewing Course

Whether you’re a total novice, or would like to pick up where you left off ten years ago, you can learn at your own pace, with plenty of one-to-one help. Over the three days, you will explore the potential of your own machine; learn about patterns; cut, fit and sew a garment; learn about zips, fastenings and finishing; adjusting hemlines and the length of sleeves; and anything else I can think of!

Book days individually at £30 each.

Half-day Workshops: 10.00-1.00 & 1.15-4.15

17th March,
10.00-1.00: Peg Loom Weaving
Easy, quick, creative and fun. On our newly designed (and deceptively simple) 25cm wooden peg looms, you can weave, make braids, and even knit. Anything that can be made into strips (fabric, plastic bags, ribbons, wool, plant material) can be woven using these versatile, inexpensive tools. Scarves,
hangings, bags, rugs, cushions, waistcoats, bracelets are all possible.

Suitable for all ages from 8 years (accompanied only).
Looms will be provided, and are available for sale. Bring oddments of knitting yarn, and any other materials (as above). It will save time if these are already cut into about one inch (25mm) strips, although some material will be available for a small supplement. Optionally, you could also bring buttons/beads for embellishment.

17th March, 1.15-4.15: Weaving with no loom at all!
Bring a hardback book (about the size of a bag that you’d like to make), plus oddments of knitting yarn, and any beads/buttons you’d like to use for embellishment. We will also be using weaving sticks to make a handle for your bag (provided, and available for purchase).

The two sessions on this day are stand alone workshops, but morning participants who also sign up for the afternoon are free to carry their first project over.

21st April, 10.00-1.00: Introduction to Canvas Work
Using traditional weave canvas (provided) create a small ’sampler’ piece, demonstrating a range of decorative stitches that can be used to make pictures, cards, pin cushions, hangings, needle cases, box tops. Please bring a pair of scissors. Tapestry needle and thread can either be brought, or purchased on arrival. Suitable for all ages from 10 years.

21st April, 1.15-4.15: Contemporary/Experimental Canvas Art
Using rug canvas, netting (or any other material in grid form), plus any amount of weird and wonderful non-traditional embellishments.

The two sessions on this day are stand alone workshops, but morning participants who also sign up for the afternoon are free to carry their first project over.
